Nikon continues to be # 1 April 3, 2010 WJO (Florida) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
I read all of these reviews before going shopping for this camera. The movie option is something I frequently use. The noise complaints worried me so I visited several stores and tried to find out what they were talking about. I could not find one camera with this noise problem. I brought it home, recorded a movie in a closed room, downloaded it to my computer, cranked up the sound, and still did not detect any noise that I've seen described in these reviews. The only noise I could come up with was a snoring dog from across the room. I have taken movies & photos of every type, from every angle, in every environment and under every lighting condition possible. I love this camera!! It's small but very comfortable to use and perfect for dropping into a pocket or purse. I don't like missing great photo opportunities so I like my camera handy at all times. I highly recommend it.
I'm not disappointed at all. Perfect pocket camera! March 24, 2010 Karen L. Sandoval (New Berlin, WI United States) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I shoot with a d300 mainly, doing floral, macro and actually, whatever tickles my fancy. When I read the review of this camera pre-release, I wanted it immediately. The focal length is perfect: 30-300mm. I can slip this little sweetheart into my pocket and have a quality camera at the ready when carrying a dslr around my neck wouldn't be an option. Seriously, I like it so well that I am considering taking it with me for our tropical vacation and leaving the d300 at home. The d300 really is a beast to travel with when you add a few lenses, even though once I am there -wherever- I am glad I have it along. This will be the true test for me, going to a photographers heaven with just the s8000. I did use it quite a bit on our last trip to Albuquerque, and loved it.
[...]
on this link above you'll see a wide range of focal lengths, I was totally impressed with the ability of the s8000 to pull the top of the Sandia mountain in clearly.
This little beauty will never replace my dslr, but it is sure nice to have in my purse at family get togethers where having a dslr along is just a hassle and to me seems so intrusive when taking candid photos.
I haven't tried the video portion of the camera, so I can't comment on the noise. Generally I pull out my Flip when I want to shoot video anyway.
You won't be disappointed in this camera :)
sound noise March 11, 2010 Barbara A. Mchale (Elizabethtown, PA) 38 out of 43 found this review helpful
I love the camera, got it last night.....
I think the following complaints about the sound noise needs
to be addressed by Nikon.......
WE NEED A STEREO HOOK-UP CABLE!!!!!
The camera records audio in stereo, thus the 2 microphones next to the flash.
1 records left sound, the other, the right sound. Pretty impressive!!!
However, the media cable supplied with the camera only is a monophonic cable.
The yellow RCA-style jack sends video signal to your computer or TV and the
white sends the audio. MONO-Phonic only, that means 1 mic signal. The camera is recording 2 mic signals, left and right, and trying to push 2 channels of audio through 1 connection, white on the cable. Therefore, the whitenoise, or feedback, is occuring. Nikon needs to supply a stereo media cable, one end connects to the camera, and needs to have 3 RCA-Style connectors on the other end. Yellow for video,
red for left audio and white for right audio. That would end the feedback, whining,
high-pitch, etc issues.
Wife loves it April 8, 2010 Gary N. Helfrich 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am a wedding photographer and own Nikons from the D100 to the D3. My wife wanted a small compact camera that she could put in her pocket or purse to have with her at all times. Grandson you know!! I (we) could not be happier with this fabulous camera. Takes terrific close up photos and the zoom is great but I really like the stabilized feature on this camera. The large rear viewing screen is sharp and clear, the controls are very intuitive.
If you want a small lightweight camera for all around shooting then I highly recommend this one. It does not have any manual controls. No shutter or aperture priority or manual. Just automatic. But for what you get and the price under $300.00 I don't think you can beat it. And the low light capabilty is also very good.
I really like this little camera

Perfect companion camera April 29, 2010 Jeffrey Yemm (Virden, Illinois) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have owned MANY cameras over the past several months. Canon, Panasonic, Sony. They are all good cameras in their own right. Some good at Macro, others with low light, and still others with color rendition. This is the best little camera for almost all situations. It is compact, light, thin, big zoom, wonderful macro and very true colors. Low light is the only real strain. If you use the night landscape mode for indoors without flash in decent light, then pretty good. Outstanding menu system. Very simple and effective. Sony and Panasonic menu systems are very funky. Canon menu is very good, but still not as nice as the Nikon. Love the display. Nice and bright. A very complete package in a small frame. Get one. It will more likely be with you when the subject you are shooting presents itself. That big DSLR is great for some, but it can scare your subject if they notice you are toting it around. After all, candid is better than posed, right?Nikon Coolpix S8000 14.2 MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black)
